It is sensible: taking what you pay for is not good for the people who created it. But when it comes to entertainment piracy, many people – whether it comes from curiosity, a vision of the future or the desire to rationalize their own law breaking – argue that things are not so easy. Now, following the publication of a new analysis of 16,000 European music consumers, the issue doesn’t seem so obvious.
A few of the findings from the study by the Joint Research Center of the European Commission confirmed the assumptions: attitudes differed from country to country, and piracy strongly influenced off-line sales.
Perhaps surprisingly, our results do not indicate a shift in digital music sales. Although we find significant differences between countries regarding the impact of downloading for music, our results suggest rather little complementarity between these two channels of music consumption. It seems that most of the music that was illegally consumed by people in our sample would not have been bought if illegal downloads were not available to them. The effect of online streaming music complementarity has been somewhat higher, suggesting the stimulating effect of this move on digital music sales.
In particular, the study found that legal shopping would be about 2 percent lower without illegal music download – which means that illegal downloads increase the number of legitimate downloads. Bottom line: People who download music mp3 are doing it most often with a melody that they would never spend money on. The positive effect of streaming and conver mp3 music was even greater.
One interesting conclusion from the study is that internet users download music for more than two times more than legal consumers, including more active on legitimate sites. In other words, people who like to listen to a lot of music are more likely to listen to music from multiple sources while people who are not very interested in music are more likely to download mp3 legally but not generally.
This complicates the evidence because there is no way to find out whether these music will consume the same amount – or just like music – if mp3 downloader are not an option (though the authors tried to track how many music sites they visited and did not buy. they did not listen to music.
